The first red of the tasting was the 2013 Grand Cru Pinot Noir 2013. This Pinot Noir is a wine from California and is inexpensive at only $6.95.
The Vintage Cellar review of the wine is the following:
"This ruby-colored wine has aromas of raspberry, cherry and a hint of
vanilla. Flavors of cherry and plum lead to a soft velvety finish. This wine can be enjoyed by itself. It is also an excellent
accompaniment with Brie, goat cheese and smoked salmon. Lamb shanks and pork
tenderloin are a favorite main dishes to pair with this wine."
First and foremost, I really enjoyed the deep burgundy color of this wine. From a scent perspective, I wasn't as crazy about it. I noticed that there were strong dark fruit scents on the nose and noted hints of black raspberry and black cherry. The dark fruits were also present in the taste of this wine - definitely some black cherry, dried currant, and black raspberry. One thing I tasted in this wine that I did not enjoy was an earthy, almost dirt flavor that it had on the mid pallet. For me, it had a deep fruity start, but then led into an earthy finish which was disappointing to me as I enjoyed the initial flavors. I would say that this wine was okay, given that I'm not a huge red drinker. As I just stated, the fruity flavors were very intriguing to me, but the earthiness that I got from it brought my enjoyment down.
